Welcome to the family/wolfpack. Prepare yourselves because you are in for 4 of the most memorable years of your life. There will be MANY high points and hopefully not too many low ones.
But not to worry that’s what I’m here for!
My name is Caolan (don’t worry no one can say it) and I’m your Deputy President/Welfare Officer for the coming year. A lot of you will know me as that guy who supplies the condoms in the student union but hopefully my job is a little bit more valuable than that. Along with my fellow Sabbaticals Sarah (president) and Donal (Academic) we are here to ensure your experience in UL goes as smoothly as possible. When it comes to matters of your welfare I’m here to guide you in the right direction.
As great as college life can be, you’ll probably face a few hiccups over the course of your time here and that is 100% normal. That’s when you come talk to me! I’ll offer what advice I can and act as a signpost to the people who can help you get back on track.
Got an issue with a landlord? Come into my office, plant yourself on the couch and fill me in. I will point you in the right direction regarding your rights as a tenant and the next step in the process to resolving the problem.
Life just getting you down and you’re struggling to get up in the morning? As a student I struggled with my own mental health and know the importance of good mental health and the benefits of talking. Whether it be to someone one in the counselling/chaplaincy services or even taking part in the one of the counselling services mindfulness classes, do what works for you. Talk to me and we will find which service could work best for you.
There is no problem too big or small to come to me with. If you are struggling financially, it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Talk to me about financial aid in the college. You forgot to put on a condom last night and feel you might need to get a check? I won’t check for you but I’ll send you to someone who will!
Throughout the year, we here in the union work with the WELFARE TEAM running campaigns on the issues that affect you the students. If you want to get involved in any campaign that you feel strongly about don’t hesitate to contact me (take the hint!). There will be plenty of volunteering opportunities to give back and if there is a worthy charity you feel I should hear about for RAG week then I’m all ears!
No matter the issue Sarah, Donal and I are here for you.
Just remember that every decision you’ve made has brought you to this point. Don’t be afraid to ask for help to keep you on the right path.
