At our first meeting this year, Emma Quinn from the socialist feminist group ROSA will speak on the topic “Winning Abortion Rights Now”.
This is going to be a vital struggle in the coming months with a Dáil Committee now meeting to decide what exactly should go to the people in a Referendum. Unfortunately, the Dáil is very conservative with only a handful of TDs being pro choice. Being "pro referedum" isn't the same as being "pro choice". A majority of the TDs on the Committee don’t support the recommendations of the Citizens Assembly which included a wide range of grounds where abortion should be allowed such as fatal foetal abnormality, health, socio-economic reasons up to 22 weeks, and 'without restriction as to reason' up to 12 weeks.
We want to organise political pressure on that Committee so that they realise that any roll back from the pro-choice recommendations of the Citizens Assembly isn’t acceptable. And two of the members on the Committee are from Limerick! So there's lots to discuss in terms of what we can do at the meeting with Emma, and will take bookings from people for a bus to March for Choice on September 30th!
Hope to see you there!
